About Motorola Semiconductor Products Sector

Motorola Semiconductor Products Sector (SPS) was for more than five decades one of the most important discrete and integrated-circuit manufacturers in the U.S. defense supply chain. The business was founded in 1949, when Dr. Daniel E. Noble persuaded Motorola founder Paul Galvin to set up a solid-state electronics research laboratory in Phoenix, Arizona. That lab, later at the 5005 East McDowell Road complex, became the seed of one of the largest semiconductor operations in the world.

Motorola's first mass-produced semiconductor product was the 2N176 germanium power transistor, launched in 1955. Through the 1960s and 1970s, Motorola SPS grew into the world's #2 semiconductor company, with manufacturing across Arizona, Austin (Texas), East Kilbride (Scotland), Toulouse (France), Sendai (Japan), and back-end sites in Mexico and Asia. It was a Motorola-built transponder that relayed the first words from the surface of the Moon to Earth on Apollo 11 in July 1969.

Motorola SPS transferred manufacturing and marketing rights to 197 discontinued military IC families — MECL10K, MGCMOS, PLL, TTL, MECL10KH, ECLinPS and analog product lines — to Lansdale Semiconductor in Tempe, Arizona. Lansdale continues to produce these under MIL-PRF-38535 QML today.
  • December 2, 2004 — Freescale Semiconductor spinoff. The remainder of Motorola SPS — microprocessors, DSPs, high-end logic, RF power — was spun off as Freescale Semiconductor, Inc. (Austin TX), listing on the NYSE as FSL / FSL.B.
  • December 7, 2015 — NXP acquires Freescale. Dutch semiconductor company NXP Semiconductors completed its approximately $40 billion acquisition of Freescale, and the legal entity Freescale Semiconductor, Inc. was renamed NXP USA, Inc. The Oak Hill campus at 6501 W. William Cannon Blvd, Austin TX — originally built for Motorola in 1984 — passed from Motorola to Freescale to NXP.
  • Micross Components consolidation. Alongside these transitions, the U.S. HiRel discrete industry has continued to consolidate. MIL-PRF-19500 is the U.S. Department of Defense performance specification for hermetically-sealed discrete semiconductor devices — diodes, rectifiers, transistors, thyristors, SCRs, and TVS devices — administered by the DLA Land and Maritime office in Columbus, Ohio (the successor organization to DSCC-VQ).
