About Advanced Power Technology
Advanced Power Technology, Inc. — traded on Nasdaq as APTI until 2006 — was a leading U.S. designer and manufacturer of high-performance RF and switching power semiconductors. Incorporated in Delaware in 1984 and headquartered at 405 SW Columbia Street, Bend, Oregon, APT was founded by a Silicon Valley engineering team that relocated to Central Oregon in the mid-1980s in part to protect a novel high-power transistor process from West Coast corporate espionage. Patrick P. H. Sireta joined as President and CEO in 1985 and was named Chairman in 1995, running the company through its IPO, three major acquisitions, and its eventual sale to Microsemi.
APT's technical center of gravity was its Power MOS product line, first introduced in 1989 and, by 2005, in its fourth generation — N-channel silicon VDMOS power MOSFETs optimized for the very-high-power end of the market (individual devices above roughly 6 kW). Beginning in 1996, APT extended the same VDMOS process into RF power MOSFETs, and after acquiring GHz Technology (2001) and Microsemi RF Products (2002), APT also became a major supplier of silicon RF bipolar power transistors. In January 2005 APT acquired PowerSicel, Inc. in Boulder, CO, adding silicon carbide (SiC) devices; the SiC line was reinforced in February 2006 by a technology license from Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems. At its peak APT ran fabs and offices in Bend, Santa Clara, Montgomeryville, Boulder, and Bordeaux with roughly 273 employees worldwide (about 146 in Bend).
Acquisition by Microsemi and transition to Microchip HiRel
On November 2, 2005, Microsemi Corporation (then Nasdaq: MSCC) and APT signed a definitive merger agreement — $2.00 cash plus 0.435 Microsemi shares per APT share, valuing APT at roughly $12.20/share (29% premium). The deal closed April 28, 2006; industry reporting placed the total value — including the Northrop Grumman SiC IP transfer — at approximately $169 million. APT was folded into Microsemi as the Microsemi Power Product Group, with the Bend, OR site continuing as a wafer fab, assembly, and test line. In May 2018, Microsemi was itself acquired by Microchip Technology Incorporated (Nasdaq: MCHP) for approximately $10.15 billion, and the former APT lines became part of Microchip's aerospace & defense (HiRel) business unit, headquartered in Chandler, Arizona. The Bend, OR facility is still active today.

- May 2002 — Microsemi RF Products, Inc. (Montgomeryville, PA). APT paid $12.2 million in cash for this low-frequency silicon RF bipolar transistor business. The 20,000 sq ft Montgomeryville wafer fab had originally come to Microsemi from SGS-Thomson Microelectronics in 1996. - January 7, 2005 — PowerSicel, Inc. APT acquired PowerSicel's silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductor business for approximately $5.4 million, renaming it "Advanced Power Technology Colorado" (Boulder, CO). Combined with the February 2006 Northrop Grumman SiC license, this gave APT — and then Microsemi — a proprietary SiC device line that became part of Microchip's current HiRel space power roadmap.

MIL-PRF-19500 is the U.S. DoD performance specification for hermetically-sealed discrete semiconductor devices — diodes, transistors, thyristors, SCRs, TVS devices, and power MOSFETs — administered by DLA Land and Maritime in Columbus, OH (successor to DSCC-VQ). For JANS power MOSFETs and BJTs — including APT's radiation-hardened lines — MIL-PRF-19500 further defines eight Radiation Hardness Assurance (RHA) levels encoded as a single character (M, D, P, L, R, F, G, or H) inserted into the part number, corresponding to Total Ionizing Dose (TID) guarantees ranging from 3 krad(Si) at "M" up to 1 Mrad(Si) at "H". APT's core product line. Introduced in 1989 and iterated through four VDMOS generations by the mid-2000s, these are silicon N-channel enhancement-mode vertical DMOS power MOSFETs qualified for JAN, JANTX, and JANTXV levels with JANS available on select part types.
