Motorola, Inc. was founded on September 25, 1928 in Chicago as the Galvin Manufacturing Corporation and adopted the Motorola name in 1947. The company became a broad electronics manufacturer producing two-way radios, pagers, cellular handsets and infrastructure, networking and cable television systems, semiconductors and defense electronics from its headquarters in Schaumburg, Illinois. Motorola spun off its semiconductor products sector as Freescale Semiconductor in 2004; Freescale merged with NXP Semiconductors in a deal that closed on December 7, 2015, and an earlier discrete and standard-logic operation had been divested as ON Semiconductor. Motorola, Inc. itself ceased to exist on January 4, 2011 when it split into Motorola Solutions, its legal successor, and Motorola Mobility.
