Zen 2
AMD's 7nm CPU core architecture, used in Ryzen 3000 desktop processors and EPYC “Rome” server processors. Custom Zen 2 cores in the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S (8 cores/16 threads) run the game logic, physics and AI for powering games like the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI. The Steam Deck uses 4 Zen 2 cores/8 threads.

What is Zen 2?
Zen 2 is AMD's second-generation Zen CPU core architecture, built on TSMC's 7nm process. It first shipped in Ryzen 3000 desktop processors and EPYC “Rome” server processors.
Both Sony and Microsoft chose eight custom Zen 2 cores for their current consoles. Those cores run the game logic, physics, streaming and AI for powering games like the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI, an open-world game that leans heavily on the CPU. The PS5 Pro keeps Zen 2 at a slightly higher 3.85 GHz.
Gaming hardware that uses Zen 2
| Device | Cores / threads | Clock |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | 8 / 16 | Up to 3.5 GHz (variable) |
| PlayStation 5 Pro | 8 / 16 | Up to 3.85 GHz |
| Xbox Series X | 8 / 16 | 3.8 GHz (3.66 GHz with SMT) |
| Xbox Series S | Custom Zen 2 | — |
| Steam Deck | 4 / 8 | 2.4–3.5 GHz |

Why it matters for component buyers
Zen 2 is still common in embedded and industrial computers built on AMD Ryzen and EPYC platforms. As those processors and the boards around them age out, buyers need matching memory, power and interface components, which is where independent sourcing of obsolete and long-lead parts fits in.
